(MT. VERNON, IL) — Two Mt. Vernon men arrested in connection last week with recent armed robberies in the area have been formally charged in Jefferson County Court with multiple Class X charges. According to Jefferson County State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman, 22-year-old Denzal Haynes and 26-year-old Steven Collier have both been formally charged with six counts Class X armed robbery, with each count punishable by between 6 and 30 years in prison if convicted. The charges against Haynes and Collier allege the men robbed Heights Finance, Jumpin’ Jimmy’s gas station and twice robbed the Times Square Liquor North. The robberies took place in Mt. Vernon since December 11th, 2015, with both men alleged to have been armed with a firearm during the commission of the robberies. They both remain in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $400,000 each. Haynes is also wanted in connection with the January 18 armed robbery of Blue Goose Liquor Store during which one suspected armed robber allegedly struck a customer on the head with a handgun. A third man, 26-year-old Thomas Rector, is charged with one Class 4 felony count of obstructing justice. Rector is alleged to have provided false information to the police during their investigation into the Jumpin’ Jimmy’s robbery. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $25,000. The three are scheduled to be formally arraigned on the charges on Wednesday via video arraignment from the jail.
