(MT. VERNON, IL) — The Mount Vernon Police Department has arrested two more men in connection with recent armed robberies in the area. According to reports, around 3 p.m. Friday, 26-year-old Steven J. Collier, of Mt. Vernon, was arrested near his home in the 300 block of Harrison. After further investigation, Collier was charged with four counts of Armed Robbery, stemming from the armed robberies of Heights Finance Company at 2929 Broadway, Jumpin’ Jimmy’s Convenience Store at 3200 Broadway, and two robberies of Times Square Liquor North at 900 1/2 Salem Road. Following Collier’s arrest, a search warrant was executed for his residence resulting in additional evidence being seized. At 7:45 p.m. Friday, 26-year-old Thomas J. Rector, of the 400 block of Johnson Street in Mt Vernon, was taken into custody at the Mt Vernon Police Department. Rector was charged with Obstructing Justice/Providing False Information and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery. The conspiracy charge is related to the armed robbery of Jumpin’ Jimmy’s at 3200 Broadway. These arrests are connected with the arrest Thursday of 22-year-old Denzal Haynes, and are part of ongoing investigations between the Mt Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Wamac Police Department, Illinois State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Additional charges are expected. Haynes has been tentatively charged with three counts armed robbery in connection with the armed robbery of Jumpin’ Jimmy’s and the two armed robberies of Times Square. He is also a suspect in the January 18, armed robbery of Blue Goose Liquor in Wamac. Haynes was taken into custody following a traffic stop around 10:30 Thursday night near Seventh and Barton in Mt. Vernon.
