(SALEM, IL) — Scam artists are keeping busy lately. According to Salem police, a number of Salem residents received calls Wednesday from someone saying they were with the Treasury Department and that the resident owes back taxes. According to police reports, one woman reported receiving a call from a private number and that a man on the phone said he was from the Treasury Department and she owed for back taxes. The man then told her he would be coming to her house and bringing law enforcement to collect the back taxes. A short time later a Salem man contacted police reporting a similar incident with someone calling him wanting tax money. Salem police advise that law enforcement will not escort someone to collect a debt and that would be done through the courts. They also advised that neither the IRS nor the Treasury Department would contact someone by phone to collect a debt and if someone did show up at their homes to call police immediately.
