(BENTON, IL) — An advisory referendum concerning the Rend Lake Conservancy District Board using water funds to subsidize recreation will not be on the March Primary ballot in Franklin County. Franklin County Board Chairman Randall Crocker told the board at Tuesday night’s meeting that it was too late to put the item on the ballot adding that it’s unlikely it will appear on any ballots in the future. It seems the district wants to take money it makes off the sale of water and use it to support recreational activities the district provides. The Jefferson County Board recently adopted the resolution at its December meeting, the board voted 5-to-2 to mix the water funds with all other funds. Jefferson County asked Franklin County to be involved in this matter and to put the issue on the ballot, but Crocker believes the board has no duty or obligation to tell other taxing bodies how to run their business.
