GOP Leaders, Rauner Propose CPS Takeover

(Chicago, IL) — Calling it a lifeline, not a bailout, Republican legislative leaders Wednesday proposed a state takeover of the Chicago Public Schools that would include the possibility of bankruptcy for the troubled system that’s facing a half-billion-dollar shortfall. Senate minority leader Christine Radogno said the step is necessary because the track record of Chicago and its public school system is abysmal. Governor Rauner immediately endorsed the plan which would set up a special state-run authority to run Chicago schools and would allow the schools to nullify the teachers’ contract.
