(Belleville, IL) — The Illinois State Board of Elections says it’s not unethical or illegal for three St. Clair County judges to try to keep their jobs by resigning and running in a regular election instead of a retention election. By running in a partisan election, the judges would need only a majority vote to win, rather than the 60-percent vote that a retention election requires. The issue could be appealed further in the state appellate court.
