Dems, Mayor, Union Call Takeover Plan Non-Starter

(Chicago, IL) — Reaction to the Republican plan for a state takeover of Chicago’s financially troubled schools was immediate and negative. Democrats dominate the General Assembly and Senate President John Cullerton said the plan “is not going to happen.” House Speaker Michael Madigan said Governor Rauner is trying to use the school crisis to push his anti-middle-class agenda. CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said Rauner is defending a school funding system that’s separate but unequal. A spokeswoman said Mayor Emanuel is 100-percent opposed to the idea, while Teachers Union President Karen Lewis mocked the GOP lawmakers saying, quote, “The children better sit down before they break something.”
