(ORIENT, IL) — Children in Orient will have a new playground to enjoy sometime this summer. The small Franklin County town recently announced that it has received a $15,000 Let’s Play Community Construction Grant through Dr. Pepper Snapple and the national non-profit KaBOOM. The new playground will be located behind city hall. Officials say a community build day will be held at some point this summer to begin construction. The grant will help build the playground, which will cost $72,000. So far, $25,000 has been raised which includes the grant money, funds received from fundraisers and money the city has thrown in from video gaming revenue. Officials say once donations get to $50,000, construction will begin. To help raise funds for the playground, a chili supper will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the American Legion Post. Let’s Play is a program that gets kids and families active nationwide. Since its launch in 2011, more than 2,000 playgrounds have been built across the country. KaBoom has collaborated with partners to build, open or improve nearly 16,000 playgrounds, engaged more than 1 million volunteers and served over 7 million children.
