CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — A new commemorative coin will honor the Shawnee National Forest as part of the U.S. Mint’s “America the Beautiful” series. The quarter’s design features Camel Rock at Garden of the Gods as a red-tailed hawk flies overhead. The Shawnee coin is the 31st in a series that began in 2010 and features national parks and sites in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. It will be put into circulation in 2016. The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that an official launch ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. on Feb. 4 at Southeastern Illinois College’s Deaton Gymnasium in Harrisburg.
