MASCOUTAH — Emergency crews have rescued members of the Mt. Vernon High School Lady Rams basketball team after theschool bus in which they were riding became trapped in floodwaters Monday night near Scott Air Force Base.

Illinois State Police, along with Mascoutah, Belleville and St. Clair, Ill., emergency crews responded to a call at Highway 161 at North County Road after the bus carrying the team to a tournament game in Mascoutah was overcome by floodwaters.

Reports indicate 18 people, including the bus driver, were rescued from the bus. No injuries were reported.

Occupants of a semi-truck that was reported on its side in the floodwaters were also rescued safely without reported injuries.

The Lady Rams were scheduled to take on last year’s second place team, Belleville West at 7 p.m. in the first night of the holiday tournament. Despite the delay of being trapped in floodwaters, the girls continued on to the high school to play their game.
