(MT. VERNON, IL) — Two overnight armed robberies targeted Casey’s General Stores in the area, the first incident in Mt. Vernon and hours later in Salem. Around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday night, Mt. Vernon police responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Casey’s General Store on Salem Road in Mt. Vernon. The suspects are described as two white males, one taller and with a heavier build than the other who was described as shorter with a slimmer build. Anyone with information regarding the robbery or the suspects is encouraged to contact the police department at 618-242-2131 or Crimestoppers at 618-242-TIPS. A few hours later, around 12:50 a.m. Thursday, the Casey’s General Store on South Broadway in Salem was held up at gunpoint. Salem police say one of the male suspects displayed a handgun. The second male suspect presented a duffle bag to the cashier. The two suspects fled the store with an undetermined amount of cash. The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot to the northwest of the Casey’s General Store. One suspect was described as wearing a grey coat and orange ski mask. The second suspect was described as wearing a camouflage coat. This incident is currently under investigation by the Salem Police Department.
