(BENTON, IL) — After months of discussion with property owners and several sites being considered, Benton City Hall will officially have a new home sometime next year. The Benton City Council Monday night approved an ordinance that will set into motion City Hall moving to the Benton Grade School District 47 building, located in the 1400 block of South Main. A move-in date is not known at this time. The city will pay the school district $550,000 for the property and take possession of it no later than July 1. City leaders say a similar ordinance is expected to be approved by the school district before the end of the month. The Benton Police Department won’t be making the move to the new building when it happens. The police department will stay at the old City Hall until arrangements can be made to find a new location. The city is hoping that it will be able to sell the old City Hall and try to use that money to buy or build a new police department, which city leaders say could cost around $250,000. As for the school district office, Superintendent Dr. Jay Goble told us Wednesday afternoon plans call for carving out room on campus for offices and believes it will be possible to do this. He says if this happens, the district will see significant financial savings. The school district offices will be moving to the Benton Grade School.
