(FAIRFIELD, IL) — Authorities have identified a 50-year-old Fairfield man shot to death Saturday night at his home as Jeffery Scott Montgomery. Montgomery’s 53-year-old friend, William D. “Bill” Johnson, also of Fairfield, is in the Wayne County Jail in connection with Montgomery’s death. According to reports, Johnson fled the scene of the shooting shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and was arrested approximately 90 minutes later in Williamson County after deputies and an Illinois State Police trooper spotted Johnson’s truck traveling southbound on Interstate 57 and stopped him as he matched the description given in connection with the incident in Fairfield. He was initially taken to the Williamson County Jail, but was later transported to the Wayne County Jail where he awaits the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail. An autopsy was conducted Sunday, confirmed the cause of Montgomery’s death was a gunshot to the chest with a small caliber weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say the shooting followed an argument over a local woman. Johnson made the news earlier this year after was arrested in July for alleged aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13, but a grand jury seated in the case did not return a bill of indictment and the case was dismissed with prejudice. Montgomery was a registered sex offender at the time of his arrest. State records show he was 36-years-old at the time of his offense and his victim was 8.
