(FAIRFIELD, IL) — A 53-year-old Fairfield man is in the Wayne County Jail after being arrested in connection with the shooting death Saturday night of a 50-year-old Fairfield man. According to reports, William D. Johnson fled the scene of the shooting shortly after 7:30 p.m. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending notification of relatives, but according to Wayne County Coroner Jimmy Taylor, the victim was shot in the chest with a small caliber gun and was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was arrested in Williamson County after deputies and an Illinois State Police trooper spotted Johnson’s truck traveling southbound on Interstate 57 and stopped him as he matched the description given in connection with the incident in Fairfield. He was arrested over the summer for alleged aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13, but a grand jury seated in the case did not return a bill of indictment and the case was dismissed with prejudice.
