(WEST FRANKFORT, IL) — A search of lockers at Frankfort Community High School in West Frankfort Wednesday morning turned up an unloaded gun. West Frankfort Police Chief Shawn Talutto says the male juvenile who brought the gun to school was charged Wednesday with unlawful possession of a firearm, transporting a weapon onto state property as well as theft. Talutto says school officials received information that there was a possible handgun stored in the building. They worked with the school resource officer and identified and interviewed the boy. He had been subsequently interviewed and suspended from school Tuesday after an item of drug paraphernalia was recovered. Another juvenile approached school officials on Wednesday telling them the whereabouts of the gun. They found the unloaded gun in a locker and recovered it. Through the course of the investigation, the male juvenile from Tuesday was found to be responsible for bringing the gun to school. He left the gun in the locker before being suspended and was not able to recover it. The gun belonged to a family member and not the suspect. The high school was placed on lockdown and searched. Talutto says nothing else was found, and there was no indication that there was a plan that would be indicative of an active shooter scenario. No students or faculty were in danger during the event. The lockdown was lifted at 10:20 a.m., and students returned to a normal school schedule.
