Mt. Vernon Township High School will be looking for a new head football coach. Jared Shaner announced his resignation this morning to WMIX Sports.

On Monday, November 30, 2015, Shaner submitted his letter of resignation for the head football coaching position to MVTHS Athletic Director Doug Creel, effective immediately.  Coach Shaner cited “personal reasons” for the resignation and offered many positive comments about his time as the head football coach.

Shaner said in a statement, “I am thankful for opportunity that MVTHS has given me to be their head football coach over the course of the last five years.

“I have loved the relationships that my family and I have made with assistant coaches and their families, players and their families, and community members here in Mt. Vernon and we will miss those. I have had tremendous support from coaches, players, and families and I am grateful for that.

“I have had an opportunity to meet with coaches and players to inform them of my decision, and those were difficult conversations to have.  I will miss them tremendously, but I believe that this decision is in the best interest of me and my family at this time.”

Creel added, “[I’m] very proud of the 5 years that Coach Shaner put into the football program. No one has put more time in or worked harder than Coach Shaner. He has done a lot for his players, coaches, and the community.”

Shaner’s winningest season in Mt. Vernon was 2013, guiding the Rams to the 2nd round of the IHSA Class 5A Playoffs and a 7-4 mark.  His career record was 13-34 in 5 seasons, coming to Mt. Vernon in 2011 after 5 seasons at Lincoln. He also served as a freshman boys’ basketball coach under Scott Gamber in 2012-13.

Shaner will remain on staff as a Physical Education instructor specializing in strength and conditioning.
