PRAIRIE DU ROCHER, Ill. (AP) — A group of historic re-enactors sat up camp at a former French fort in southern Illinois as a tribute to an 18th century voyage from southeast Missouri to New Orleans. Fort de Chartres State Historic Site south of St. Louis hosted the group of history buffs this weekend. The free event spanned both days. The re-enactors portrayed militia and families from Ste. Genevieve, Missouri returning home from a trip to Louisiana. The original fort was built on the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1720s in what at the time was a French territory. The reconstructed fort is located west of Prairie du Rocher in Randolph County.
