(SANDOVAL, IL) — Sandoval firefighters responded to a structure fire around 1:30 Sunday afternoon in the 2600 block of Old Highway 51, that left an occupant of the home with minor burns to her hand. According to Sandoval Fire Chief Chad Parson, the fire started when an occupant of the home was attempting to light a wood burning stove, burned his hand and the fire left the stove. Parson says when firefighters arrived on scene, flames were already blowing out of the living area and had reached the garage, attic, second floor and the porch. Parson says the home suffered severe damage and is not habitable. Red Cross was notified to provide the family with assistance. He says Steven and Rita McClaren are the owners of the home. Mutual aid was provided by Odin and Centralia fire protection districts at the scene, along with Lifestar. Patoka Fire Protection stood by at the Sandoval Fire Station. Sandoval firefighters remained on scene until approximately 6:30 p.m.
