(MT. VERNON, IL) — A Mt. Vernon couple accused of the severe 2014 beating of a 3-year-old boy were in Jefferson County Court this week as defense and prosecution attorneys prepare the case for trial. Defense attorneys for 29-year-old Michael Belmont and 28-year-old Kaysie Belmont say they are not yet prepared to proceed to trial as their medical expert has not yet completed a report on medical records of Lukas Burris, the young child who suffered numerous injuries including a stroke from the beating prosecutors claim he suffered at the hands of the Belmonts. The delay in the defense expert’s report is attributed to those medical records being initially delivered to the expert in the wrong format. Prosecutors say once the defense report is completed and submitted, they will need time to review it, and prepare their own response. However, Judge Jerry Crisel denied a request to delay the December 15 jury trials scheduled for the couple. The case is scheduled for pre-trial hearings December 2 and December 9, leading up to the December jury trials. Michael Belmont remains in the Jefferson County Jail. He is charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a child and aggravated domestic battery. Kaysie Belmont, who is on home confinement, faces charges of aggravated battery, domestic battery, reckless conduct, and endangering the life of a child. A no-stalking/no-contact order taken out earlier this month by Lukas’ father against Kaysie Belmont was dismissed, as a no-contact order was already in place for Lukas, in the felony case against her. A similar order, however, was approved for Dave Padget, Kaysie Belmont’s step-father.
