(BENTON, IL) — It’s not official yet, but it looks like Benton City Hall may be moving to the Benton Community School District Office located at 1402 S. Main Street. The Southern Illinoisan reports city leaders have spoken with the school district over the last month about the building and with a few other property owners. The school district is currently using the office space, but has plans of its own to move. The current City Hall, located on 500 West Main, is over 60 years old. Officials say it would take close to $2 million to renovate or to build a new facility. The report went on to say that one of the downsides of city hall moving would be no parting with the Benton Police Department, which has shared space in City Hall since the 1970s. The city hopes that if this deal goes through that someone will want to purchase the current city hall and improve it. It’s unknown at this time as to when the city council will make the possible move official. A few months ago, the city was considering a move next door to the Hiramoti Building, but that deal fell through.
