Granite City Steel Plant Facing Uncertain Future

(Granite City, IL) — US Steel officials repeated Wednesday that the company is still considering temporarily closing its Granite City works. CEO Mario Longhi told stock analysts today that closing the plant and idling its two-thousand workers is part of the company’s reaction to falling orders and low steel prices from foreign competitors. The plant makes rolled steel that’s shipped to another plant where it’s made into pipes used in the oil and gas industry.
