American Coal Announces Layoffs

(GALATIA, IL) — American Coal this week laid off 50 additional workers at its mine in Galatia. Officials with Murray Energy Corporation, the mine’s parent company, told the Southern Illinoisan 44 hourly workers and six salaried employees were let go immediately. As with its last two layoffs, the company blames President Obama’s administration and the increased use of natural gas for the “ongoing destruction of the United States coal industry.” The company laid off 86 employees in May and 112 more in August. About 450 people continue to work at the mine.
