(SALEM, IL) — A 24-year-old Mt. Vernon man remains in the Marion County Jail after he reportedly led a sheriff’s deputy on a two-county high-speed chase early Sunday morning. Reports say Nikko Branch was apprehended after Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies deployed stop sticks on the north side of Mt. Vernon that blew both front tires of his vehicle, causing it to slow down. Branch didn’t stop, however, and continued another half-mile on the flat tires before stopping and being taken into custody at gun point. The chase, which at times reached speeds of 120 mph, started around 1:30 Sunday morning on Route 161 near Burge Road, it continued south on Route 37 into Mt. Vernon before ending on Highland View road. Branch was reportedly wanted on an outstanding Marion County arrest warrant for failure to appear in court on a driving an uninsured motor vehicle case. He was additionally arrested for alleged aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving without a valid license. He was cited for improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign.
