(Cairo, IL) — Efforts are being made to keep a man accused of killing two people and injuring another in a botched bank robbery in Southern Illinois from being executed. Attorneys for James Watts of Cairo have filed several motions in court in advance of a 2017 trial. Several claims are made in the motions, including racial and gender bias in the death penalty process and that too many innocent people are executed in the death penalty process.
