Committee Says Two Education Officials Truant

(Springfield, IL) — Two of Governor Rauner’s key education appointees today refused to appear before a legislative committee that’s examining perks given to school administrators. State Superintendent Tony Smith and state board of education chairman James Meeks were no-shows at the House committee. Chairman Jack Franks wanted to ask about a stipend on top of the newly-hired Smith’s 220-thousand-dollar contract. Franks said the perk is an end-run around a new pension law that establishes a second tier for new administrators.
