(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 16-year-old Mt. Vernon girl suffered serious injuries after she was reportedly struck by a car Wednesday night on North 10th Street at North Street in Mt. Vernon. Illinois State Police say around 7:30 p.m., 28-year-old Clay Gibson of Mt. Vernon was going south on North 10th Street approaching North Street when the girl was attempted to cross North 10th and ran into the path of Gibson’s car. Gibson was unable to stop in time and struck the girl with the front end of his car. The girl was taken to Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon and later airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. The intersection was temporarily closed for four hours. State Police continue to investigate the crash and charges are pending.
