EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The interim chancellor at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville says the school will shift about 9 percent of its spending as it deals with the lack of a state budget. Interim Chancellor Stephen Hansen gave the annual “State of the University” speech on Tuesday. He said the Edwardsville campus would begin looking for alternative funding to state support. He said the 9 percent budget realignment doesn’t amount to cuts but involves shifting money from some programs to set aside funding in anticipation of cuts. University employees will be offered incentives for early retirement. Hansen said the school couldn’t “afford to fiddle while Springfield burns.” Hansen also said the school will create a university-wide congress to find ways to improve their programs with fewer resources and less state money.
