(DAMIENSVILLE, IL) — Authorities have identified the person killed in a three-car crash on Interstate 64 in Clinton County Tuesday as a 36-year-old Mt. Vernon woman. According to the Illinois State Police, Michele Baker was a passenger in an eastbound 2015 Toyota Corolla near mile marker 35 when the car veered off the highway and struck a 2012 Mack truck stopped on the shoulder for mechanical problems. The Toyota was then struck by a 2016 Mazda CX-5. Baker was ejected from the vehicle in which she was riding, according to police. Clinton County coroner Philip Moss said he pronounced her dead at the scene at 11:57 a.m. An autopsy is expected to take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The driver of the Toyota, identified only as a 44-year-old woman from Mt. Vernon, was transported to a St. Louis hospital by helicopter. The driver of the Mazda, a 73-year-old male and his 70-year-old female passenger, both from Green Valley, Arizona, were transported by ambulance to a Washington County hospital. The identities of the other people involved in the crash were not been released. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to police. No citations had been issued as of Wednesday. Interstate 64 was closed for more than six hours in the aftermath of the crash, according to state police. First responders reported difficulty getting to the scene because of massive traffic backup caused by the accident. Nearly 14 miles of I-64 was closed due to the accident, with motorists diverted between New Baden and Okawville.
