(MT. VERNON, IL) — Retired Marine Lt. Col Paul Schimpf, who ran unsuccessfully last year for Illinois Attorney General, announced Monday he will seek election to the 58th Illinois Senate District seat being vacated by retiring State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville). Schimpf and his family will be joined by Senator Luechtefeld for a multi-county tour Wednesday, appearing at the Rolland Lewis Community Building on South 27th in Mt. Vernon at 9 a.m. Luechtefeld announced over the summer that he won’t seek reelection to the seat he has held for more than 20 years. He was allowed to run in 2012 in the 58th District after new legislative boundaries put his home outside of the district. If Luechtefeld wanted to run in 2016 he would have to move, which he says he won’t do. Instead the 74-year-old says this will be his last term in office. The term ends in January 2017.
