(MT. VERNON, IL) — On Tuesday, 26 year old Steven Murphy of Chicago was charged with Aggravated Arson and Residential Arson related to the investigation. A previous charge of Obstructing Justice was dismissed. Murphy remains incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center on the arson-related charges with a bond of $250,000 (10% applies). On June 28th, 2015 the Mt Vernon Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 301 Harrison in Mt Vernon. A resident, Tamara Malin, was found deceased inside the residence. On July 1st, 2015, detectives from the Mt Vernon Police Department arrested Murphy on an original charge of Obstructing Justice for providing false information related to the investigation. Murphy was incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with a bond of $50,000 (10 % applies). Murphy has remained incarcerated since this arrest. On July 8th, 2015 detectives from the Mt Vernon Police Department arrested 25 year old Mt Vernon resident Lindsey Payne-Favors on a charge of Obstructing Justice for providing false information related to the investigation. Payne-Favors was incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with a bond of $25,000 (10% applies) and has been released upon posting cash. Both subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty. Additional charges from this investigation are under review by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office.
