Southern Illinois man killed in tree-cutting accident

WATERLOO, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in southern Illinois say a Waterloo man died when a tree fell on him while he was cutting down trees in the Valmeyer river bottoms. Monroe County Coroner Vicki Koerber says 46-year-old Conrad Pete of Waterloo died in the Monday accident. She says Pete died instantly of blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen. Police reports say Pete was one of two men cutting down trees along a road Monday afternoon when a tree landed on Pete. Rescue crews responded but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
