ALTON, Ill. (AP) — Hundreds of admirers of Miles Davis have turned out for the unveiling of a bronze sculpture of the jazz legend in the Illinois community where he was born. The (Alton) Telegraph reports that more than 350 people showed up Saturday for the weekend event in Alton. Davis is more closely associated with nearby East St. Louis. But he was born in Alton and lived in the riverside community just north of St. Louis for about a year before his family moved. He died in 1991. The Saturday evening event also included jazz performances. Patricia Ackman is the co-chair of the Miles Davis Memorial Project. It’s raised about $150,000 in two years. The hope is that the statue and related initiatives will help establish downtown Alton as an entertainment destination.
