United Way Helps Homeless Shelter Stay Open

(Springfield, IL) — The United Way in Springfield has bailed out a homeless shelter just a few blocks from the Capitol that had been faced with closing its doors during the daytime because of the state budget impasse. An advance of about 39-thousand-dollars will allow the Helping Hands shelter to remain in operation for several months until federal grant money starts to flow. It houses about 50 homeless adults and gets about a quarter of its annual five-hundred-fifty-thousand-dollar budget from the state.
