Report: U of I athletes tested positive for drugs 65 times

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A newspaper report says University of Illinois athletes tested positive for banned drugs 65 times during the 2014-2015 year. The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports it’s more than any school year in at least a decade. The newspaper cites documents obtained through an information request. University officials say the year’s tally doesn’t stand out too much when compared as a percentage against previous years. They also note multiple positive tests for a single athlete could be included in the count. Some drugs can stay in the system for a while. As long as the test shows the amount decreasing, university officials say the athlete isn’t further penalized. The sports with the highest numbers were football, which has the biggest roster, followed by baseball/softball. The most common drug was marijuana.
