COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a man who allegedly stole an SUV and robbed a bank in southern Illinois killed himself after being cornered by police. The Belleville News Democrat reports that the man allegedly stole a car in Caseyville, near St. Louis, around 2:30 p.m. Friday before robbing a bank in nearby Collinsville a half hour later. Illinois State Police Commander Derek Wise says the man fired at police as they chased him, and at least one bullet struck a Collinsville police cruiser. Wise says the man ditched the SUV in East St. Louis and ran into a wooded area in Centreville. The newspaper says police radio transmissions indicated they followed him via a tracking device in the bank bag. Wise says the man fatally shot himself when confronted by officers. The suspect’s name hasn’t yet been released.
