(MT. VERNON, IL) — A Jefferson County jury deliberated for seven hours before handing down a guilty verdict late Friday of Involuntary Manslaughter in a case against a 48-year-old Mt. Vernon man. Sammy Kehrer was on trial for two counts First Degree murder for the February 2014 stabbing death of 37-year-old Ric Houser. Houser was stabbed in the chest during a physical altercation outside the Mt. Vernon Gun and Sportsman’s Club. After the two-day trial was handed to them, the jury was given four possible verdicts, which included guilty of First Degree murder, guilty of Second Degree murder, guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter or not guilty. After the guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter verdict was announced, Judge Jerry Crisel revoked Kehrer’s bond, ordering him to remain in the Jefferson County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest the day after the stabbing. Sentencing for Kehrer has been set for October 6th following a presence investigation.
