(EWING, IL) — A toddler drowned Saturday after falling into the family pool in Ewing. Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Marks told WSIL-TV that 2-year-old Ryan Russell had made his way out of his mother’s sight for about five minutes. A gate surrounded the pool, but the latch on the door was not shut allowing Ryan to go inside. Ryan’s mother found him unresponsive in the pool. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 call about the drowning around 4:15 p.m. Marks says CPR was already in progress. Ryan was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy done Saturday revealed the cause of death was accident drowning. Funeral arrangements are expected to be made today at the Johnston Funeral Home in Ina.
