CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Southern Illinois University’s Campus Lake has been closed for several weeks because thick algae has formed on its surface. SIU officials tell the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan that there’s not much that can be done. Kevin Bame is vice chancellor for administration and finance. He says the algae will dissipate but the university doesn’t know how long the lake will be closed. The lake is closed to fishing and boating and people are warned against letting their pets drink from the water because they could become sick. The algae can cause skin rashes on humans. Bame says the school has posted warning signs and area drinking water isn’t affected. The lake also was closed in fall 2014 for the same reason.
