Walking tour in Springfield explores Lincoln romance

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A free walking tour this summer is aimed at history buffs who want to explore the romance between Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd. The “Abe and Mary: Quite Contrary” tour highlights the unlikely love between the rough young lawyer and Todd, a Southern belle. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is offering the tour on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The hour-long tour starts at the Springfield museum and ends at the First Presbyterian Church. The museum advises guests to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Reservations can be made on the museum’s website. Guide Trevor Thompson says the tour takes visitors back to the 1830s through the 1850s and shows them parts of Springfield that helped define the relationship between Lincoln and Todd.
