SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AP) — An Air Force technical sergeant who fled an Illinois child sex assault trial to visit Las Vegas has been charged with desertion. Thirty-five-year-old David Lawrence Helm was declared a fugitive after leaving Scott Air Force Base days before his court-martial. Helm is accused of sexually assaulting a girl between the ages of 12 and 16 at several locations in 2013 and 2014, including the Illinois air base and in LaFollette and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. An adult female was allegedly assaulted at Scott and in Dayton, Ohio. Helm told the Nevada state trooper who arrested him that he had gone skydiving, driven a high-performance race car and was headed to California to ride the Pacific Coast Highway. He was pulled over for having a broken tail light on his motorcycle.
