BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The city of Belleville is attempting to get another area recognized for its historic prominence. The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports that the city wants to establish a National Register Historic District for an area northwest of the Public Square. The proposal focuses on buildings that went up between 1860 and 1960, including a 1911 building used as a post office. If approved, it would be the third such district in the community. The proposal will be presented to the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council on Friday in Springfield. If it gets approval, the plan heads to the National Park Service, which makes the final decision.
