(MT. VERNON, IL) — Mt. Vernon Police have arrested two individuals in connection with recent thefts and burglaries in Mt.Vernon. According to reports, 20-year-old William A. Newman, was arrested Wednesday for alleged burglary, stemming from a break-in at the Jefferson County Sports Authority building at Strothman Park, and two counts theft between $500 and $10,000, stemming from the theft of a truck from American Pride Cabinetry and one from the City of Mt Vernon. Newman was previously arrested on April 11th for possessing property stolen from the Jefferson County Sports Authority. Additionally, Newman was charged with another count of burglary and theft from a coin operated machine stemming from a May 24, burglary at the Soapy Joe’s Car Wash on Veterans Memorial Drive that occurred after Newman was released from custody from the possessing stolen property charge. Also arrested Wednesday was 20-year-old Robert C Burnett, who has been charged with burglary stemming from a break in at the Jefferson County Sports Authority Building at Strothman Park and two counts of theft $500-$10,000 stemming from the theft of a truck from American Pride Cabinetry and one from the City of Mt Vernon. Both Newman and Burnett are being held in the Jefferson County Jail, with bail remaining to be set. The investigation continues with additional charges likely.
