Rauner Tort Reform Plan Fails

(Springfield, IL) — Another piece of Governor Rauner’s pro-business, anti-union agenda has been shot down by the Democratic-controlled legislature. This time it was Rauner’s call for limits on civil lawsuit awards, known as tort reform, that failed to make it out of a Senate committee. Rauner’s plan would set monetary limits on medical malpractice suits and would set geographic limits on such lawsuits to prevent attorneys from “venue shopping” for favorable judges. Democrats argued that the changes would benefit corporations at the expense of people who are victimized by negligence.
