(OPDYKE, IL) — A 45-year-old Opdyke man is in the Jefferson County Jail, charged in connection with the stabbing of a woman in the neck and leg. On Friday, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a report of a victim with stab wounds at a local hospital. Further investigation from both the patrol and detective divisions named William Welch as the suspected offender in the stabbing. Welch was taken into custody Friday in a vehicle in the Opdyke area. Jefferson County Sheriff Travis Allen says Welch had packed up all his belongings and was trying to leave the state at the time of his arrest. Allen says the victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries at an Evansville, Ind., hospital. Welch is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond on charges of aggravated domestic battery, battery, unlawful restraint, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, weapons offenses and parole violation. Welch was paroled in October from the Illinois Department of Corrections on a Class 1 felony conviction for burglary in White County.
