Unions Hail Demise Of Pension Reform Law

(Springfield, IL) — The Illinois Supreme Court’s decision striking down the 2013 pension reform law is being called a victory for retirees and public employees by Senate President John Cullerton. Illinois AFL-CIO president Michael Carrigan thanked the court and urged lawmakers to work with union members to find a solution to the state pension crisis. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he thinks similar changes made to some city pension plans could survive since unions were involved in crafting those changes. Governor Rauner says the decision shows the need for a change in the Constitution differentiated previously earned benefits and future benefits.
