(East St. Louis, IL) — The worst-performing school district in Illinois is searching for volunteers. The Read to Succeed program wants to bring in more people to read to third-graders in the East St. Louis school system for two hours on Saturday mornings for six weeks. So far, there are just over 100 people signed up to help. That’s just a fifth of what is needed because there are 489 third-graders in the district. The first two Saturdays had only about 30 to 40 students, so Superintendent Art Culver has requested third-graders to stay after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the program. Anyone interested in volunteering should go to ESTL189.com or email director of public information and community relations Kim Roberson at Kimberly.roberson@ESTL189.com.
