(SESSER, IL) — The Sesser City Council Monday night approved donating $3,964 to the Sesser-Valier School District to help the district provide its after-school programs to kids for the month of May. On April 3, the Illinois Department of Human Services issued a notice of suspension of the school district’s grant that funds its Teen REACH after-school program. This grant suspension was part of a larger package of current-year budget cuts Governor Rauner announced to the public the same day. Sesser Mayor Jason Ashmore says he approached school officials about helping out after a lot of parents informed him about the importance and the great results of this program. Ashmore hopes the state will reinstate the grant or the school applies for other grants in order to provide after-school programs. He added that the city will always do what it can to help our children.
