EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — The East St. Louis Housing Authority police chief says a man shot by an officer had been barred from the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. Chief Cortez Slack says the man should not have been there. Investigators are trying to determine how he got in. Slack tells the Belleville News-Democrat it’s undetermined whether there was an altercation between the unidentified 20-year-old man and the officer. The man is reported in stable condition at St. Louis University Hospital. He was shot in the lower torso. The unnamed officer remains on paid administration leave pending the outcome of the investigation being conducted by Illinois State Police. Housing authority police were investigating burglaries Saturday when the shooting occurred. Slack says it’s not clear whether the shooting victim is a burglary suspect.
