(BENTON, IL) — As conditions continue to deteriorate at the Franklin County Annex Building in Benton, county board members are now starting to look for ways to move offices out of there. Franklin County Board Chairman Randall Crocker said this week that he would like to see the building empty by this fall, but board member Ken Hungate said he would like it done on a faster timetable. One location being discussed for some of the offices is a former dental office the county now owns on East Park Street. The county owned Campbell Building is also in play, but new electrical services and wiring for computers and phones will have to be installed before it will be ready. The county still has plans to move the county clerk’s office out of the courthouse and into the Campbell Building and renovate the courthouse. Since county voters turned down a quarter of a percent increase in the sales tax to pay for renovations to the courthouse and Campbell Building, the county has been talking with Southern Illinois Bank about refinancing some of its existing bonds to pay for the project. That could take a couple of months. County leaders are also planning to meet with Baysinger Architects to plan the initial renovation to the Campbell Building.
