(MT. VERNON, IL) — Responding to a report Saturday of ATVs being driven on the roadway in the area of South 22nd Street in Mt Vernon, police arrested two men for allegedly stealing the all-terrain vehicles from the Jefferson County Sports Authority in Mt. Vernon. Responding officers reportedly located the suspect ATVs outside a residence in the 1000 block of South 19th and made contact with the residents at the home. The officers determined the all-terrain vehicles were stolen from the Jefferson County Sports Authority in Mt Vernon. Two subjects, 18-year-old Shawn Rainey, and 20-year-old William Newman, were taken into custody. A detective was called in to assist patrol officers as the investigation continued. The officers responded to a second residence in Mt Vernon and located a stolen truck from Mt Vernon and a four wheeler stolen from Jefferson County. The investigation continues. Rainey and Newman were taken to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of possessing stolen property. They remain in custody awaiting formal charges and the setting of bail.
